ART BASEL 2011

15 - 19 June 2011

For Art Basel 42, Bruce Silverstein Gallery would be pleased to present an exhibition of photographic works by the world famous sculptor Constantin Brancusi.

The artist's photographs of his own sculptures from the 1920s and '30s reveal a markedly creative purpose for the camera.  For his photographic artworks, Brancusi purposefully arranges his sculptural masterpieces before the lens and takes a radical perspective on his 3-dimensional forms when photographing them.  The artist allows the light hitting his masterpieces to flare and bounce, portions of his sculptures illuminated by dramatic light, other elements cast in dark shadow.  The artist crops and composes his photographs at will, clearly not for the purpose of documentation as most sculptors employed the photographic medium, but rather the artist reinterprets his sculptures via the camera and his photographic works are a form of creative expression for this world class artist.    Not only are these photographs significant due to their creator, but also these works are unquestionably unique and avant-garde contributions to the history of photography.

Additionally, Bruce Silverstein Gallery will also show vintage prints by American and European masters such as Man Ray, Aaron Siskind, Edward Weston, and Barbara Morgan as well as contemporary works by artists Yao Lu, Shinichi Maruyama, Michael Wolf, Martin Denker, Todd Hido, Nicolai Howalt and Trine Sondergaard.
