Stand Highlights:

 

Discovered in Milan in the late 1970s, a selection of exceptional photographs by legendary avantgarde artist Man Ray will be presented to the public for the very first time. Dada Group (1921-1922), a gelatin silver collage depicts leading members of the movement holding various objets d’art, including a portrait of the artist himself, affixed carefully on the surface. Anchoring the group is a series of photographs taken by Man Ray of his wondrous Dadaist sculptures, between 1917-1944.

 

Originally exhibited between the late 1940s & early 1950s—and presented for the first time since–is a selection of vintage mounted exhibition prints by Aaron Siskind. These iconic modernist images record and represent the Abstract-Expressionist artist’s revolutionary method of utilizing photography in re-interpreting how we see our surroundings. Recently featured as part of the groundbreaking exhibition Abstract Expressionism at the Royal Academy of Art, Frederick Sommer’s masterwork Sumare (1951) is an alluring counterpoint to the work of his contemporary.

 

Like so many of photography’s early practitioners, Edward Steichen also dreamed of finding a method to reproduce the world around him in its colorful splendor. A passionate experimenter and a technical master, he was an early champion of the prized dye imbibition process of the 1930s. An incredibly rare treasure, White Lotus, (c. 1940) is a telling example of the artist’s relentless strides to perfect the technical aspects of the medium and to express his love and awe of nature.
