FRIEZE MASTERS 2015

The gallery is pleased to present a selection of modern photographic masterpieces at Frieze Masters in London from October 14 to 18, 2015. Artists include Erwin Blumenfeld, Constantin Brancusi, Bill Brandt, Marie Cosindas, Imogen Cunningham, Robert Frank, Robert Heinecken, E.O. Hoppe, André Kertész, Robert Mapplethorpe, Barbara Morgan, Man Ray, Ed Ruscha, Aaron Siskind, Frederick Sommer, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Edward Weston.

Highlights of the gallery’s presentation include a rare collage by Man Ray, an early selfportrait by Robert Mapplethorpe, and a portrait of Dorothy Norman by Alfred Steiglitz.

The Man Ray is an over-sized, unique photo collage made prior to the artist’s first Retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He transformed this striking image of Lee Miller’s neck by collaging onto it a necklace made of string. Interestingly, the exhibition was heavily comprised of mixed media collage works, an indication that Man Ray was interested in his legacy as a multi-media artist as opposed to solely a photographer. This exquisite piece has remained in the same private collection since the close of the 1966 exhibition.

The Robert Mapplethorpe piece is one of the artist’s earliest self-portraits, signed and dated 1971. Created by collaging photographic material from a Polaroid onto drafting paper, this unique composition is informed by his experience as a draftsman as well as his early, formative explorations in photography.

The image of Dorothy Norman is considered one of the most beautifully constructed portraits ever composed by Alfred Stieglitz. Mounted and annotated by the artist “For Dorothy’s Mother and Father,” this vintage gelatin silver print maintains an excellent provenance.
